What is an MVNO?
We all know the big four mobile carriers: Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile (I suppose it's the "big three" now that the T-Mobile/Sprint merger is official). There are several smaller cell phone carriers to choose from as well. We've all probably heard of a few at the consumer-level, companies like Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless, Metro, Virgin Mobile—the list goes on. Companies like this are also known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).
So what's the difference? The big three build, invest in, and own their own network of cell towers all across the county. While the MVNOs don't have their own network of towers, they use the networks of the big three to power the services they offer to us. Many of these consumer-grade MVNOs will "piggy-back" on one of the big three carriers. Since MVNOs don't have the additional cost of building and maintaining an enormous infrastructure, and they're often required to purchase massive amounts of service (voice, text, data) at wholesale rates to even be an MVNO, their plans are often cheaper than those of of the big three.
That might be great for us as consumers, but what about the B2B world and corporate mobile services? Are there any MVNOs designed for businesses?
